4th Grade Study Guide - Environments, Food Chains and Food Webs

Test - October 14, 2020

Know the definition  of

Producer - an organism that makes its own food using energy from the sun

Consumer - an organism that eats other plants or animals

Carnivore - an organism that eats only meat

Herbivore - an organism that eats only plants

Omnivore - an organism that eats both animals and plants

Decomposer - an organism that breaks down dead, decaying material

Scavenger - an organism that eats an animal that has been killed by something else (eats the leftovers)

Know how decomposers and producers depend on one another.

Decomposers break down dead material that the producers can use to make food.  Produce make the materials that will die and be used by the decomposers.

Know that producers need water, sunlight and carbon dioxide to make their food.

Know why the sun is important for food..

Sunlight is necessary for the producers to make food.  Then the producers are eaten by other animals.

Know how to interpret a food web.  Know if an organism on a food web is a carnivore, herbivore or omnivore.

Know that “Environmental Factors” are all of the living and non-living things in an environment. Environmental factors are the biotic and abiotic things in an environment. For example: animals, plants, air, and sunlight are all environmental factors.

Understand how non-living factors might influence the living factors in an environment. (For example, how would the temperature affect the animals in an environment?)
